Wrinkles develops as a natural aging process and they make the skin around the eyes to become less elastic, resulting in droopy eyelids. Occasionally this happens at an early age. It is usually easy to correct droopy eyelids through an outpatient procedure called a blepharoplasty.

The Procedure

Eyelid plastic surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthetic. Before surgery, your optician will perform a comprehensive eye examination and counsel you about the procedure. Photographs and visual field tests are often required.

During the procedure, the surgeon will mark the areas of the eyelid requiring attention. Excess skin or fat may be removed to improve the appearance and function of the eyelids. In some cases, the muscles controlling the eyelids may be modified to help them function properly.

When is a Blepharoplasty Recommended?

Excess skin around the eyelids can make it difficult to keep your eyes open. This excess skin may cause the eyelids to droop, giving a sleepy, or disinterested appearance. In severe cases, your upper field of vision may be partially blocked. This may cause brow aches and fatigue. If you are having these symptoms, or simply do not like the way your eyelids appear, you may be a candidate for a blepharoplasty.

Preparing for The Operation

Products that contain Aspirin, Vitamin E, or Evening Primrose oil should be avoided for four weeks before surgery. The use of Vitamin K (10mg daily) for three days before surgery is recommended.

Strong alcoholic drinks should be avoided before surgery.

Important: Patients should not smoke for two weeks before surgery and for a few days after surgery. Smoking interferes with the circulation of blood to the skin and can cause death of the skin flaps.

Patients should purchase Betadine shampoo use it to wash their hair the night before surgery (if surgery is scheduled for the morning) or the morning before (if surgery is scheduled for the afternoon). Hair may be conditioned and blow dried.

On the day of the surgery, the patient should wear comfortable, loose clothing that do not have to be pulled over the head, to the hospital.

Patients must not wear any make-up (including mascara and nail polish) when they go into surgery. If the patient tints, dyes or bleaches his or her hair, this should be done no later than one week before surgery.

Post Operative Care

If the patient develops any signs of infection, pustules or boils on the face or body before surgery, the doctor should be notified immediately.

For the first few days after the procedure you may experience some swelling and discomfort. This will ease as the eyelids heal.

Bruising is common after the procedure. The appearance of "black eyes" is to be expected. As the eyelids heal, the bruising will go away.

The incisions are usually made in the normal skin creases, so in time, they will be hardly noticeable.
